Or you might say, 'I'm not going to keep this machine long enough for TCO to matter.' That's a valid point. If you're renting for a three-day job, total cost of ownership doesn't apply. Rental cost and convenience are what matter. But the minute you buy a piece of equipment—even a very small one—you're buying an asset. Assets are worth what they produce, not what they cost on day one.
I'm not telling you to ignore price. I'm telling you to include the things price doesn't cover.
The next time someone hands you a quote for a Bobcat E10 mini excavator, a TL25.60 telehandler, or an air compressor, don't just check the monthly payment. Ask what happens when the fuel pump dies, when you need a bucket bag, or when a Friday afternoon call comes in. If the support behind the machine is strong, that machine is worth more than the one that was a few hundred dollars cheaper.
Because in the end, the machine you can't use costs the most. That's not a slogan. It's the most expensive lesson I've learned in eight years of rush orders.
