Bobcat E32 Excavator Review: The Most Consistent Compact I've Tested—and Who Shouldn't Buy It

On the other end, if you're doing serious excavation—basements, full site prep, daily deep trenching—the E32 will feel underpowered. A 5-ton-class machine is a different animal, better suited to sustained heavy digging. The E32 is a utility machine, not a production machine. Pretending otherwise sets up a bad buying decision.

There's also the emissions piece. The E32 runs a Yanmar engine that meets EPA Tier 4 Final standards, which is good for the environment and for resale. But the aftertreatment system adds complexity. If you're in a region where emissions compliance isn't enforced and you're buying used, that's worth factoring into your long-term cost projections.

What Years of Inspections Taught Me

It's tempting to think you can compare spec sheets—dig depth, horsepower, hydraulic flow—and pick the winner. But after four years and 600+ inspections, I've come to believe spec sheets tell you maybe a third of the story. Probably less. At least when it comes to long-term reliability.

When I compared the E32 against a similarly-priced competitor side by side a few years ago, the brochures were almost identical. Same dig depth class, same hydraulic flow, similar operating weight. A machine two or three times the weight doesn't automatically mean two or three times the capability—especially when you're working in tight urban spaces.

Who Should Actually Buy the E32

I recommend the Bobcat E32 for three types of buyers:

  • Landscaping and hardscape contractors who need attachment versatility—digging footings, moving mulch, running a hydraulic breaker for patio demolition, all with the same machine.
  • Utility and plumbing contractors doing trenching in developed areas. Reliability and fast parts access matter more than maximum dig depth when you're on a deadline in front of a client's house.
  • Equipment rental fleets. The E32 is one of the lowest-headache rental units I've inspected. Consistency means no surprises for renters, and Bobcat's support network keeps parts logistics predictable.

I'd point you toward something different if you're a residential contractor chasing tight-access jobs or a heavy-excavation general contractor who needs sustained deep digging. In the first case, look at the E27 or E19. In the second, look at a 5-ton-plus machine.

I also remember a landscaping company owner deciding between the E32 and the smaller E27. The E32 gave him more attachment options; the E27 could ride on his existing trailer without an upgrade. We went back and forth for half an hour. He bought the E32, and I still don't know if it was the right call—but he's never complained about the trailer issue, so maybe it was.

Final Caveats
